The origin of the game of poker is widely disputed, but it is more likely that poker derived its present day form from elements of many different games. The most popular belief is that it was invented by the Chinese around 900 A.D., possibly derived from the Chinese dominoes.

The history of poker in the United States has a bit more consistency. Poker traveled from New Orleans by steamboat up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. The game then spread via wagon and train. Modifications such as stud poker, the draw, and the straight became popular, during the Civil War. European influence of poker ended when the joker was introduced as a wild card in 1875.
Gaming has been popular in every culture throughout history, so it is likely that different versions of the playing-card deck were developed independently by different cultures at different times. It is believed that poker was started, in one form or another, in many different places. One story credits its invention to the Chinese, with a game that evolved from the popular pastime of dominoes. Another theory credits the Persian game As Nas, which involved five players, four suits, and twenty-five cards. Or, poker could have come from the Indian card game called Ganjifa. Any one or all of these cultures could have contributed to the birth of poker, which really took off over in Europe shortly after this.
What about betting? At first, men gambled for money on the table; they had fistfulls of cash, diamond rings, and even deeds to houses. After a period of time, however, gambling became more advanced, and gamblers began playing for poker chips. Now, people don’t only play for those chips–they also collect them. Poker chips have become a hot commodity in the gambling community, almost as important as the game itself.
